In many of Eric Carle's interview he talks about his views on children and how children need room to grow and create on their own. Carle feels that things need to be beautiful and attractive to the eye, but not over done. This is why his books have very simple pictures and words. He also discusses the importance of reading and his own personal favorite books to read, which were Mickey Mouse and Flash Gordon.
Eric Carle also talks about The Very Hungry Caterpillar: "...you too can grow up to be a big beautiful butterfly." Carle relates his children's books to his audience and talks about the lessons that can be learned from each one. ("Q&A with Eric Carle 2007." YouTube. YouTube, 2007. Web.) |

Last year, Eric Carle made a collage for Puffin Books to celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In the video Carle discusses what inspired his writing of the story. He was once very worried about becoming an adult and having to figure out adult life, and he thought his readers could relate to that. He wanted to assure him that like the caterpillar, "you too will grow up and you too will be beautiful."
